Author/Director: Katherine Mansfield
Title: The Doll’s House
Text type: short
My response to this short text was disgusted by the cruelty shown by the characters by the text coming from the class that discriminated towards their classmates which were the Kelvey children. This reason was because of their low social status, and they wear clothes made from cast-off fabrics. That makes them stand out which makes them targets of society which is why children bully and judge them because of their status.
Another Thing that sparked my attention was the social status of the doll house which the Burnell children used to flaunt their wealth and reinforce their perceived superiority but while they also liked the doll houses’s charm, their main objective was for other classmates’ attention. but despite their wealth they only let upper classmates to be able to see the doll house. I also think it examines how children learn from adult behaviours that show their place in a social order. This whole text in my image is all about status, wealth, luxury. I don’t think status should be a thing to compare to others, people shouldn’t get bullied, judged, just because of status.
The message is the unfair treatment of different social classes, especially through the actions of the privileged Burnell children which the doll house they use to expand their social life.
I think the favourite part of this text was when Kezia let the Kelvey children see the doll house, despite their social status, and how society treats them and with their mismatched clothing she still invited them inside. It could maybe be because she is too young to understand, but I think because of her innocence she doesn’t yet internalise the idea that the Kelveys are undesirable because they are poor or just maybe that emotions such as empathy that overwhelmed her feelings, but at the end of the day she is the hero of the story.
I recommend teenagers should read this because they can understand the difficulty in life which they had to endure, and also they can picture an understanding of how they can relate in their lives, and Experiences of being bullied or the status of the Kelvey children relating to others in which they were poor. So it could make teenagers treat others differently because of their status now knowing the challenges they had to endure in life and could give teenagers perspectives of others lives, and how it would be cruel for someone to insult and bully them. Knowingly feeling a slight sadness if they were in that situation. It could also bring out hero’s who cancel out the negativity in socialite such as Kezia who allowed the Kelvey children to see the doll house feeling empathy rather than cruelty shown by the rest of the class. After many warnings to not let them in, Kezia neglected the warnings and allowed them inside.
As a person who would be ashamed of my status not because of wealth but because of the environment that i live in, for example. The Kelveys suffered from wealth and the classmates did not acknowledge, and which my classmates called me names just because of a town that I live in, which the town i live in has connection to how i treat my life. I feel like I can relate to how the Kelveys felt because I’ve been treated poorly, missed judgement because of my environment status, which society will always judge. But there’s always one person in society, one person in particular who understood my situation And how he shut out society, no matter the warning, which can slightly relate to how Kezia allowed the Kelveys to look at the dollhouse despite the warning, and how that one person took action. Accepted me being the hero despite bearing the risk of being hated by society he didn’t think otherwise.
